Simple tips to relieve your Period Cramps and Discomfort

“I have got my chums or periods. It is sure going to be 3 to 5 days of sheer hell”

These are the exact words from a girl’s or a woman’s mouth during her period days. However there are some simple and easy tips that can give you a good relief from this harsh period cramps and discomfort.

Of course you should consult your doctor in case of unusual and heavy bleeding and severe pains, but it if you are only experiencing a slight discomfort; you can follow these few simple tips to overcome the same.

1.     Track you period dates and be prepared

The first and the foremost tip is to predict your period dates accurately so that you can prepare yourself for what you are about to experience. Now days there are several apps available on your android phones and iPhones that will easily assist you in tracking your period days every month. The usual symptoms that indicate you are approaching your period dates are bloating, unusual gas formation, feeling moody and irritable.

Hence it is always better to equip yourself with a period emergency kit in your bag, which should mainly include tampons or sanitary pads, wet wipes, an extra underwear etc.

You can also invest in some leak proof panties so that you do not feel embarrassed when your periods occur when you are at your workplace or school.

2.     Hot Bath

One of the best methods to get quick relief from period pain and discomfort is to have a hot water bath, or even a better option would be to use a hot water bag on your pelvic and abdomen area where you are experiencing the cramp.  You can also add a few drops of lavender oil or jasmine oil to your hot bath water, as it will relax you and make you feel refreshed.

3.     Eat during period cramps

Indulge in food types with high anti-inflammatory properties such as dark chocolate, fish, mushrooms etc, during your period days. This will provide you with the much needed relief. Also ensure not to binge on junk and oily food items during this time.

4.     Black tea ginger concoction

A cup of steaming black tea with ginger will do wonders especially during your period days. One, it will keep your body warm and this heat is good enough to reduce the cramps.  The anti-inflammatory properties of black tea will bring down the bloated feeling and will also ease the pain in your belly region. Since ginger is a natural painkiller, it will play a major role in killing the cramping pain caused due to your periods.

5.     Jumping Exercise

Now this may sound really weird, but one of the many ways to get quick relief from periods pain and heavy bleeding is to keep jumping on your bed. Usually you are advised to indulge in some kind of light workout or exercise, which might not be possible during those days. This exercise will remove all the blocks and will initiate free flow of blood. And this will take you to a point where your bleeding will reduce considerably and will relieve you from the harsh pain.

6.     Keep a box of carom seeds handy

Carom seeds have proved to be a good solution for period cramps. A teaspoonful of carom seeds with boiled water will give you quick relief. You can also chew few grains of carom seeds when you are not in a position to have it with boiled water, during your period days.

7.     Reduce smoking

It is seen that people who smoke often have higher risks of period cramps and discomfort. So an easy technique would be to quit smoking especially during your period days.

8.     Massage

Have a friend or partner massage your lower back area during your period cramps. You can also use aromatherapy oils to massage your lower back or abdomen area while during menstruation discomfort.

9.     Painkillers

Few painkillers like ibuprofen can give you temporary relief for your period cramps, however it is not advised to give into medicines always. Also do make it a point to consult with your doctor before taking these painkillers, so that you do not face any kind of adverse after effects or side effects.

10.     Indulge in Sex

This is one of the most unconventional methods for period pain relief. It is noticed that orgasms pressurizes the pelvic region to such an extent that it relieves you from the pain.

11.     Yoga poses

Certain yoga poses will definitely relieve you from period discomfort and also will help you relax both mentally and physically. You can practice certain yoga poses such as:

  • Child’s Pose
  • Cat-Cow Yoga Pose
  • Reclining Twist Pose
  • Pigeon Pose
  • Inverted Leg Pose
  • Corpse Pose

12.     Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation treatment

This form of treatment is used to treat the condition of dysmenorrhea in women. As per this treatment, the patient dons a small battery pack on a belt that emanates mild electric current that passes to the electrodes. This current initiates the release of chemicals that ultimately block or reduce the painful nerve impulses.

Consult your doctor

It is advised to consult your doctor in case:

  • You have severe and unbearable menstruation cramps that last for more than 2 days.
  • When you experience vomiting or fainting during your periods
  • When the blood flow is uncontrollable and extremely heavy.
  • When you experience fever along with your cramps
